He eventually completed 'Tales of the Alhambra' in 1832. In 1829 he was allowed to move into Granada's 'Palace of Charles V' at the Alhambra determined, as he wrote, "to linger here until I get some writings under way connected with this place". In 1828 he published 'The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus' and 'The Chronicles of the Conquest of Granada' a year later.

While there he began scouring the Spanish archives for new and colorful material and began working on several books at once. While in Paris in 1826 he was invited by Alexander Hill Everett, American Minister to Spain, to join him in Madrid. He was one of the first American writers to win acclaim in Europe becoming America's first genuine internationally best-selling author with his publication of 'The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent' in 1819 and 'Tales of a Traveller' in 1824.
